On New Years Day, 1861 the Lovely Nelly (a collier brig) ran aground on Whitley Sands in a tumultuous tempest. The Cullercoats fishwives (and probably some horses and men) pulled the lifeboat 2 miles to Whitley Bay, where the lifeboat could be launched in the foul conditions. With waves breaking over half mast high, the lifeboat crew performed a heroic rescue, with all but the poor cabin boy – Thomas Thompson aged 12- being saved. The lifeboat bowman was John Chisholm, whose nickname was Jack the Devil.
